If you're looking for a natural approach to healthier-looking skin and facial aging, cosmetic acupuncture offers something a little different.

At Jean Donati Acupuncture & Facial Rejuvenation in Towson, MD, cosmetic acupuncture — also called facial acupuncture — combines specialized acupuncture of the face with traditional body acupuncture. The goal isn't to dramatically change the way you look. It's to support your skin, soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, improve facial tone and circulation, and help you look refreshed — while still looking like yourself.

What Is Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic acupuncture uses ultra-fine acupuncture needles placed at specific points on the face.

It may be used to address:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Dull or uneven-looking skin

  • Facial tension

  • Puffiness

  • Changes in facial tone and elasticity

  • Overall skin health and appearance

But cosmetic acupuncture isn't only about where the needles are placed on your face.

In my practice, facial acupuncture also includes body acupuncture based on your individual needs.

Stress, poor sleep, digestion, hormonal changes and overall health can affect how you feel and how your skin looks. This whole-person approach is one of the things that makes cosmetic acupuncture different from treatments that focus exclusively on the surface of the skin.

How Does Cosmetic Acupuncture Work?

During a cosmetic acupuncture treatment, very fine needles create tiny, controlled stimulation in the skin and underlying tissues.

This encourages a local healing response and circulation to the treated area. The stimulation is also intended to support the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, proteins that are important to the structure, firmness and elasticity of the skin.

Specialized facial acupuncture techniques can also address the muscles beneath the skin. Treatment may focus on areas such as the forehead, cheeks, jawline and around the mouth, depending on your individual concerns.

The changes are intended to develop gradually and look natural.

The goal isn't to give you a different face. It's to help you look refreshed while still looking like you.

What Can Cosmetic Acupuncture Help With?

People choose cosmetic facial acupuncture for many different reasons.

You may be interested in treatment to:

  • Soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Support firmer, healthier-looking skin

  • Improve the appearance of dull or tired skin

  • Support facial circulation

  • Address facial tension

  • Reduce the appearance of puffiness

  • Support facial tone and elasticity

  • Take a proactive approach to changes associated with aging

Cosmetic acupuncture isn't reserved for a particular age.

Some people begin facial acupuncture when they first notice changes in their skin. Others choose it proactively as part of their regular approach to skin health and aging.

Why Is Body Acupuncture Included?

This is an important part of how I practice cosmetic acupuncture.

Your face isn't separate from the rest of your body.

Stress, sleep, digestion, hormonal changes and other health concerns can influence your overall wellbeing and may also be reflected in your skin.

That's why I don't simply place needles in your face and send you on your way.

Your cosmetic acupuncture treatment includes body acupuncture selected for you and what is happening with your health at that time.

It is facial treatment with a whole-person approach.

How Many Cosmetic Acupuncture Treatments Will I Need?

Cosmetic acupuncture is cumulative.

A single treatment may leave you feeling relaxed and your skin looking refreshed, but changes in facial tone, texture and the appearance of fine lines take time.

In my practice, I typically recommend weekly treatments for approximately 8–10 sessions, depending on your age, skin, goals and overall health.

You may begin noticing changes before completing the entire series, but consistency is important.

After the initial series, periodic maintenance treatments can help support your results.

Cosmetic acupuncture isn't intended to be a quick fix. It's best suited to someone who prefers gradual, natural-looking changes.

Is There Downtime After Cosmetic Acupuncture?

There is typically little to no downtime after cosmetic acupuncture.

Most people can return to work or their usual activities following treatment.

Because acupuncture needles are being inserted into the face, an occasional small bruise can occur. This is generally temporary.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Cosmetic Acupuncture?

Cosmetic facial acupuncture may be a good choice if you:

  • Prefer a natural approach to facial aging

  • Want gradual rather than dramatic changes

  • Want to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

  • Would like to improve the appearance of dull or tired-looking skin

  • Want to support facial tone and circulation

  • Prefer a treatment with minimal downtime

  • Like the idea of addressing your overall health along with your skin

Your health history, medications, skin condition and individual goals should always be considered before beginning treatment.

That's one reason I prefer to start with a conversation rather than assume the same treatment plan is appropriate for everyone.

Supporting Your Results Between Treatments

What you do between cosmetic acupuncture treatments matters, too.

Healthy skin needs the same basic things the rest of your body needs: adequate nutrition, hydration, sleep, movement and protection from excessive sun exposure.

Simple habits can help support your skin and your cosmetic acupuncture treatments:

  • Eat adequate protein and vitamin C as part of a balanced diet

  • Stay hydrated

  • Get regular movement and exercise

  • Prioritize good-quality sleep

  • Find ways to manage ongoing stress

  • Protect your skin from the sun

You don't need an elaborate routine. Consistency — both with your treatments and with basic skin and overall health habits — is what matters.

Cosmetic Acupuncture With an Individualized Approach

I've spent more than 34 years in healthcare, first as a Physician Assistant and later as a licensed acupuncturist. You can learn more about my background and approach to acupuncture.

That medical background continues to influence how I approach cosmetic acupuncture today.

At Jean Donati Acupuncture & Facial Rejuvenation, I see one patient at a time and never double-book appointments.

Your skin, health history, lifestyle and goals are your own. Your treatment should be, too.

Cosmetic acupuncture isn't about chasing someone else's idea of how you're supposed to look as you age.

It's about supporting your skin and helping you look healthy, rested and refreshed — naturally.
