Cosmetic Acupuncture

Cosmetic acupuncture, also known as facial acupuncture or facial rejuvenation acupuncture, is a personalized approach to facial and skin rejuvenation. Depending on your skin, concerns, and goals, treatment may include ultra-fine facial acupuncture needles, microneedling, nano-needling, facial gua sha, facial cupping, or a combination of these treatments.

Each technique works a little differently, but the goal is the same—to improve the appearance and health of your skin in a natural way. Treatments may help improve circulation, facial tension, skin tone and texture, and support collagen and elastin production.

Cosmetic acupuncture also takes a whole-body approach. Stress, sleep, digestion, hormonal changes, and overall health can influence how your skin looks and feels. When facial acupuncture, microneedling, or nano-needling is performed, traditional body acupuncture is included so we can address all of you—not just your face.

At Jean Donati Acupuncture & Facial Rejuvenation in Towson, Maryland, you don't need to know which treatment you need before you come in. We'll talk about what you'd like to improve and personalize your treatment accordingly.

Facial Acupuncture with Needles

Facial acupuncture uses very fine acupuncture needles made specifically for delicate areas of the face. The needles are gently placed in specific areas to increase circulation, relax facial tension, and support collagen and elastin production.

  • Soften fine lines and wrinkles

  • Improve facial tone and firmness

  • Reduce puffiness

  • Improve skin tone and texture

  • Support collagen and elastin

  • Increase facial circulation

  • Relax facial tension

  • Promote a refreshed appearance

Consistency is important. Facial acupuncture is generally performed weekly for approximately 8–10 treatments, or until noticeable results are achieved. Treatments can then be spaced farther apart as needed to help maintain results.

Although facial acupuncture is often used for skin rejuvenation, facial needling is not only cosmetic. It may also be used as part of acupuncture treatment for conditions affecting the face, such as Bell's palsy.

Microneedling

Microneedling is a skin rejuvenation treatment performed with the AcuLift™ MicroPen rather than individual acupuncture needles. The pen uses a sterile 16-pin cartridge to create tiny, controlled microchannels in the skin. These small areas of microtrauma signal the body to begin its natural healing response, supporting the production of collagen and elastin as the skin repairs itself.

Jean Donati completed microneedling and facial rejuvenation training with Michele Gellis, MAc, LAc, a nationally recognized educator in facial and cosmetic acupuncture. Jean is currently the only AcuLift™ MicroPen provider in Towson, Maryland, listed in the AcuLift provider directory.

Microneedling may help improve:

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Crow's feet and forehead lines

  • “11” lines between the eyebrows

  • Nasolabial folds and marionette lines

  • Acne scars and uneven texture

  • Sun damage and dark spots

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Enlarged pores

  • Loss of firmness and elasticity

  • Skin tone and texture of the face and neck

What to Expect

A topical numbing cream can be used before treatment for comfort. During microneedling, a professional skincare serum is selected for your individual skin and applied during treatment. The microchannels created by the MicroPen help the serum penetrate the skin rather than simply sitting on the surface.

After treatment, your skin may look pink or red, similar to a mild sunburn, and may feel slightly irritated, dry, or flaky. This generally settles within about a day. You'll receive instructions on how to care for your skin after treatment.

Treatment Schedule

Microneedling is generally performed about once a month to allow the skin time to heal and rebuild. Consistency is important, and approximately 6–10 treatments may be recommended. Some people notice changes after 2–3 treatments, while others may need more depending on their skin, sun damage, lifestyle, and goals. Once desired results are achieved, treatments can be spaced farther apart for maintenance.

Each microneedling session includes traditional body acupuncture.

Nano-Needling

Nano-needling is a gentle skin rejuvenation treatment performed with the AcuLift™ MicroPen using a specialized nano cartridge. Unlike microneedling, nano-needling works closer to the surface of the skin, creating much smaller, more superficial microtrauma. This gentle stimulation encourages the skin's natural renewal process, helps exfoliate the surface, and allows professional skincare products to absorb more effectively.

Nano-needling may help:

  • Soften fine lines

  • Smooth rough or uneven skin

  • Improve skin tone and texture

  • Brighten dull skin

  • Refine the appearance of pores

  • Improve absorption of skincare products

Treatment Schedule & Uses

Nano-needling is generally performed weekly and may be used on its own or between monthly microneedling treatments. Because it works more superficially, it can provide gentle skin stimulation between monthly microneedling treatments..

Nano-needling can also be used on delicate areas such as the lips and under the eyes, where traditional microneedling is not performed. It may also be used on the hands to address uneven skin tone and sun-related dark spots.

There is little to no downtime following treatment.

Each nano-needling session includes traditional body acupuncture.

Scalp Microneedling for Thinning Hair

Microneedling can also be used on the scalp as part of an individualized approach to certain types of thinning hair.

Creating controlled microchannels in the scalp may help support the area around the hair follicles and improve the absorption of appropriate topical products.

Scalp microneedling may be considered for certain types of nonscarring hair thinning, including age-related thinning, postpartum shedding, and hair loss following illness. Because hair loss can have many causes, treatment is individualized to determine whether scalp microneedling is appropriate for you.

Facial Gua Sha & Facial Cupping

Facial rejuvenation doesn't always require needles or a MicroPen. Facial gua sha and facial cupping offer gentle, hands-on ways to work with circulation, lymphatic movement, puffiness, and facial tension.

Facial Gua Sha

Facial gua sha uses a smooth stone tool and gentle techniques to encourage circulation and lymphatic movement while releasing facial tension. It may help reduce puffiness and leave the skin looking and feeling refreshed.

Facial Cupping

Facial cupping uses small, specially designed cups with gentle suction to encourage circulation and lymphatic movement. Unlike traditional body cupping, the suction is light and the cups are kept moving across the face.

Facial cupping may help reduce puffiness, release facial tension, and leave the face looking and feeling refreshed.

Which Facial Treatment is Right for Me?

You don't need to know before you come in.

Facial acupuncture needles, microneedling, nano-needling, facial gua sha, and facial cupping work in different ways and may be used individually or in combination. The right approach depends on your skin, your concerns, your goals, and how often you're able to come for treatment.

Consistency is important. Some treatments are performed weekly, while others are spaced farther apart. We'll talk about what you'd like to improve, how regularly you're able to come in, and determine which treatment—or combination of treatments—makes the most sense for you.
